Most of us enjoy our daily dose of coffee to wake us up or to help us focus, but we need to be aware that overindulging can have a detrimental effect on our teeth. The colour of our teeth, known as a shade, is determined by the environment and lifestyle we lead. Over time, teeth can become stained due to smoking, drinking coffee, tea and red wine, and this can have a negative impact on our smile. Teeth whitening, also known as bleaching, is the process of restoring a tooth’s natural whiteness and can be achieved with an at-home whitening kit or in a professional whitening appointment.
At-home whitening kits containing trays and whitening gel are designed to be safe and comfortable. Typically, the trays are filled with the whitening gel and then worn for a prescribed amount of time – usually, 1–2 hours for a few weeks. It is expected that wearing the trays for a longer period of time (up to 4 hours or overnight) will produce quicker and more effective results. The trays are instructed to be removed after the prescribed amount of time and then discarded. After the recommended treatment time, it is advisable to wait at least 24 hours before consuming coffee, tea, red wine or other staining agents. After whitening, it is recommended to consider changing habits to ensure a long lasting whitening result.
We spoke to Dr. Aziz from Academy Dental London who specialises in teeth whitening treatments and he had this to say – “It’s important to note that drinking coffee can cause staining on teeth and can lessen the positive effects of teeth whitening. Following your at-home whitening treatment, we recommend to avoid food and drinks that cause staining for at least 24 hours in order to get the best results. Any consumption of staining elements should be limited and drinking through a straw is recommended to reduce contact with the front teeth.”
Factors Affecting Teeth Whitening Results
The age and natural shade of teeth before whitening are two of the main factors playing a role in the outcome of the procedure. Teeth whitening works best on natural teeth – those that have not been restored with such things as veneers, fillings, bridges or dental implants. Teeth that have been artificially coloured by these processes do not respond to bleaching and may require a professional cosmetic treatment.
In some cases, teeth whitening may not produce the desired potential results due to external factors such as the environment or lifestyle choices. Smoking and the consumption of high-coloured drinks such as tea, red wine and coffee are all major contributors to tooth discoloration and can influence the outcome of the teeth whitening procedure. This is why it is important to take the necessary steps after the whitening period to continue to maintain the same shade and stop it from returning. Changing habits and avoiding staining foods and drinks can help to provide a lasting result.
The Pros And Cons Of Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening aims to offer a brighter and whiter smile, although it’s important to recognise that there are pros and cons to this procedure that are worth considering. Teeth whitening is readily available and the procedure itself is short and simple, with most treatments lasting about 1–2 hours for at-home whitening kits and up to 1 hour in a dental office. In addition, the treatment can result in a more confident and attractive smile, which can impact the way in which others find us. On the other hand, tooth whitening may fail to produce the desired results, is not permanent and may require periodic maintenance.
Other Options For Teeth Whitening
Other alternatives to teeth whitening are available and a dentist may suggest a veneer or bonding procedure if an individual has deep stains or severe discolouration. Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are custom made and bonded to the surface of teeth in order to restore the natural colour or shape. Bonding involves the application of a tooth coloured material – resin – and is used to repair discolouration, chips or gaps from between the teeth. Both procedures can produce good results, however professional whitening may be used to top-up the colour in order to provide a brighter and whiter smile.
Maintaining Your Teeth Whitening Results
After whitening teeth with a professional teeth whitening treatment or at-home teeth whitening kit, it is important to avoid staining agents such as coffee and red wine. Using a straw for drinks that cannot be avoided and brushing teeth twice a day with a whitening toothpaste can help to preserve the whitening results and maintain a bright, white smile.
Effects Of Long-Term Teeth Whitening
The effects of long-term teeth whitening have not been extensively studied and further research is needed to determine the safety of the use of whitening products over prolonged periods of time. It is advised to speak to a dental professional before starting any whitening treatments.
