In an effort to improve concentration, boost energy levels and improve mental functioning, more and more people are turning to coffee as their daily go-to drink. Caffeine, the chief stimulant in coffee, can have numerous health benefits even helping to reduce the risk of premature death. But too much coffee can lead to a number of undesirable side effects, such as shortness of breath.

It’s no secret that coffee can speed up a person’s heart rate and elevate blood pressure. When consumed in moderation, the effects are relatively harmless. But if consumed in excess, coffee can have a pronounced impact on your blood pressure and heart rate, increasing the amount of oxygen needed by your heart to function. As a result, the heart can’t pump out enough oxygen to the lungs. This causes the tissues in the chest to become deprived of oxygen, resulting in shortness of breath.

In addition to shortness of breath, too much coffee can cause symptoms like dizziness, nausea and headaches. These symptoms can be further exacerbated by other caffeinated beverages and foods, such as tea and energy drinks. When caffeine enters your body, it stimulates the release of adrenaline, which can cause your heart to beat faster and your blood pressure to rise. At this point, your body is essentially hyperventilating, leading to shortness of breath.

Most experts recommend limiting your daily caffeine intake to 400 milligrams. That’s equivalent to about 4 cups of coffee per day. Going over your daily limit can lead to adverse effects, including shortness of breath. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their doctor, as the effects of caffeine can be more pronounced in these cases.
