Can I Drink Coffee After Taking Vitamin D

Many people take vitamin D supplements to help combat deficiencies in their diets. While vitamin D is important for maintaining bones and muscle strength, some worry about how it will affect their daily routines, particularly when it comes to drinking coffee.

It is perfectly safe to drink coffee after taking vitamin D. Since vitamin D is fat-soluble, it is slowly released into your body as it assimilates from your intestines. Typically, you will have enough vitamin D in your body for at least two hours before the effects of coffee start to kick in. So if you want to get the most benefit from your vitamin D supplement, it is best to take it with or immediately after your coffee.

The only exception to this advice is if you take an extended-release formula of vitamin D, which is intended to be taken only once a day. These formulas can take up to 12 hours to completely release the vitamin into your body, and so should not be taken with coffee. Most people, however, take standard vitamin D supplements, which are intended to be taken multiple times a day, and so can be taken safely with a cup of coffee.

In addition to vitamin D, there is some evidence that caffeine helps increase the body’s absorption of calcium, another important nutrient. So if you are on a calcium supplement as well, it makes sense to drink coffee with it to increase its effectiveness. However, keep in mind that there is evidence that too much caffeine can interfere with the absorption of other important minerals, so it is best to limit your intake.
