Caffeine Content andDiarrhea

Coffee is known for its stimulating effects and is one of the best-loved beverages all over the world. But the effects of coffee don’t come without side effects and in some cases, it can cause or worsen abdominal disorders, including diarrhea. Coffee contains a considerable amount of caffeine, which may explain why it has the potential to cause digestive disturbances.

Caffeine is a powerful stimulant and a potent central nervous system stimulant that affects a range of areas, including mood, alertness, and focus. It is also a diuretic, meaning it increases urination which can lead to dehydration and one of the main causes of diarrhea. In coffee, caffeine stimulates the stomach’s muscles and increases gastric motility. This has the potential to cause abdominal spasms, cramping, and loose stools.

The amount of caffeine in coffee varies depending on the type and method of preparation, a cup of regular brewed coffee contains approximately 95 mg. of caffeine while a cup of decaffeinated coffee contains only approximately 5 mg. of caffeine. In comparison, an energy drink, such as Red Bull, can contain up to 85 mg of caffeine per eight-ounce can. Therefore, individual susceptibility to the side effects of caffeine can vary significantly.

In some cases, drinking espresso before meals can increase digestion due to its stimulant effects. However, if the person is already suffering from stomach problems, such as diarrhea, it is advised to avoid drinking espresso or coffee near mealtimes. This is because caffeine’s stimulant effect can increase gastric motility, leading to more loose stools.
