Coffee has become an essential part of life for many people, and for many of us, coffee is essential for conquering the daily tasks of running errands, working a 9-5 job and the whole lot of other roles that may be filled in an average day. And of course, we’re all aware that drinking coffee while driving can be dangerous, not to mention illegal. So, can you drink coffee while driving?

The answer is a definite no. In fact, drinking coffee while driving is dangerous and illegal. Drinks with higher sugar content and caffeine content can impair a driver’s ability to stay cautious of their surroundings and make rational decisions behind the wheel. This puts the driver’s life as well as the lives of others on the road at risk. Also, when you reach out for a cup of coffee while driving, you’re taking your attention away from the roadway and this can easily cause an accident. And of course, we haven’t even got started on the phenomenon of spilled coffee in your car.

Moreover, caffeine may cause tremors and palpitations, regardless of the amount ingested, leaving you without the ability to concentrate on the road. Unfortunately this can quickly cause an accident that could have easily been avoided. It has been shown that when a person drives faster than they usually do, they are more likely to crash. This is why texting while driving is also illegal and carries penalties.

It is a good idea to wait until you are at your destination or have pulled over before drinking a caffeinated drink such as coffee. However, tea and other decaffeinated beverages are usually considered to be safe to drink while driving, as they don’t contain the ingredients that can impair your judgment or reactions. Drivers should also take note, however, that spilling a hot liquid in the car upon choice of beverage can be hazardous whether it is caffeinated or not.
