How does our society’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for coffee affect our bodies? Many of us rely heavily on that morning cup of joe or indulge in our preferred caffeinated beverage throughout the day. But, can having an excess of this popular beverage, negatively impact how our bodies process it? Drink too much and you may find yourself suffering from coffee-induced diarrhea.

Diarrhea is the frequent passage of loose or watery stools and is often caused by a virus or bacteria in food or water. A person who consumes excessive amounts of coffee is likely to suffer from an increase in both, stool frequency and fluidity. This is mainly due to the fact that caffeine is a natural laxative and in large quantities, results in increased motility through the gastrointestinal tract.

Studies have shown that caffeine can act as an osmotic laxative, meaning it increases fluid secretion in the intestine by drawing water in from other parts of the body, leading to more frequent stools. Coffee and other caffeinated beverages can also increase the production of acid in the stomach, resulting in a decrease in transit times within the intestines.

Excess consumption of coffee can also cause dehydration, another cause of diarrhea. As caffeine is a diuretic, it increases the need to urinate and thus can lead to decreased water intake and dehydration. If the body does not receive enough fluids, it begins to extract water from the waste and this causes diarrhea.
