Dental implant surgery is a delicate and intricate procedure. While the surgery itself is straightforward, it is important to adhere to some aftercare instructions to ensure a successful outcome and speed up the healing process. Many people wonder if it is safe to drink cold beverages such as cold coffee after a dental implant surgery.

The amount and quality of healing the body undergoes after a dental implant procedure is highly individualized. Generally, the area heals within four to six weeks. The healing process is harder on smokers and people with diabetes and/or immune problems.

James Donovan, a renowned dentistry specialist, explains, “If you consume cold drinks during or shortly after implant surgery, there is a risk of irritation and swelling in the affected area due to the cold temperature. They can also cause infection and bleeding of the gums, which could delay healing.” He further adds, “An implant is a foreign object in the mouth and is not as tolerant to cold temperature as normal teeth.”

It can also be a good idea to avoid hot foods and drinks. Hot beverages increase the blood flow to the site of implantation and cause swelling in the area. This can delay healing and increase the chances of developing complications. In some cases, the implant may even become loose and come out.
