As a person observing Lent, the decision of whether or not to give up certain things can be a difficult one. Lent comes with a certain set of rules and guidelines that focus on fasting, reflection, prayer and self-sacrifice. This creates a lot of questions concerning the things we are allowed to consume and the things we are not allowed to consume for the forty days before Easter.

For many people, one of those things that is seen to be an integral part of our lives is coffee. As the world’s favorite hot beverage, can you drink coffee while observing Lent? Let’s explore further.

The answer to this question is not as straightforward as it may seem. According to the Catholic Church, abstaining from something during Lent is a way of acting out the sacrifice of Christ. This is why meat is generally avoided on Fridays during Lent. Coffee is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, so it is up to the discretion of those observing Lent whether to abstain from it or not.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “all persons are obliged to do penance”, which means they should make up for their sins with acts of self-denial. As such, when it comes to drinking coffee during Lent, it is ultimately your choice if you would like to do it. Some Catholics may choose to forgo coffee for the duration of Lent, while others may choose to keep consuming it.
