Coffee is a widely popular beverage that is enjoyed around the world. According to the World Coffee Research, coffee beans are the second most valuable extracted agricultural crop of the world, generating a multibillion-dollar industry. However, despite coffee’s ubiquity, there remains a debate regarding the consumption of coffee when infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) – an infection of the gastric tract. While many individuals are familiar with H. pylori, few are aware of its effects on coffee consumption and if it is safe to drink coffee when infected.

H. pylori is a bacteria found in the digestive system and is thought to cause ulcers and certain types of gastroenteritis. The stomach is a complex organ, with many essential enzymes and microorganisms. H. pylori inhabit the intestines and can cause the disruption in digestion and gastrointestinal problems, such as stomach pain and nausea. Furthermore, H. pylori can cause various other health problems, such as ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastric cancer.

When infected with H. pylori, many wonder if drinking coffee is recommended or prohibited due to its possible side effects. Research conducted by Merhring et al. showed that an infection with H. pylori disrupts the balance of microbes in the stomach and may lead to increased stomach acid levels. As a result, the stomach can become inflamed and fragile, making it more sensitive to the effects of certain foods. Moreover, due to its acidic nature, coffee can potentially lead to increased acid levels and stomach pain in individuals who are infected with H. pylori.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, individuals infected with H. pylori are recommended to limit their coffee consumption to one or two cups per day. Furthermore, mild caffeinated beverages such as tea and hot chocolate can also be consumed but should be consumed in moderation. If a person finds that even these beverages are causing digestive discomfort, they should consider eliminating them from their diet. Additionally, decaffeinated coffee is a suitable alternative for those infected with H. pylori and suffering from digestive issues since these beverages are typically less acidic than regular coffee.
