Pregnant women, especially in their first trimester, often worry about what they can and cannot consume. Many kinds of foods and drinks are not recommended for pregnant women, and coffee is no exception. Some people even argue that caffeine is dangerous for mother-to-be and, when consumed in large quantities, can be harmful for both the baby and the mother. Despite all of the questions around it, coffee can actually be safely enjoyed in moderation.

Caffeine, contained in coffee, has several adverse effects on pregnant women and their unborn babies. It is known to cause physical distress, increased heart rate and even placental problems. Caffeine can also cross the placenta and adversely affect the baby. Elevated levels of caffeine in the blood of pregnant women also have been linked to miscarriage, stillbirth, and preterm birth.

In general, pregnant women should limit their intake of caffeine to no more than 200mg per day. This is roughly equal to one serving of coffee. It is also important for pregnant women to be aware of the amount of caffeine contained in other beverages and food items such as energy drinks, tea, and chocolate. By limiting their overall daily intake, pregnant women should make sure that they do not consume more than the recommended amount.

In addition to being mindful of the amount of caffeine they consume, pregnant women should also pay attention to other factors when drinking coffee during pregnancy. For example, the level of acidity in the coffee can cause heartburn, which is one of the most common complaints during pregnancy. Therefore, pregnant women should favour milder coffee blends to reduce the negative side effects. Also, adding milk and sugar can negate some of the potential harm.
