For couples looking to expand their families, the road to conception can be a long and difficult one. In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is often sought after to assist in this journey, but many prospective parents are hesitant to begin the process due to associated risks. One issue often raised is the consumption of coffee during the IVF stimulation period with some believing it could negatively impact the outcomes.

In an effort to clear up the confusion, doctors have conducted studies to determine if there is a potential link between coffee and IVF stimulation. Analysis of the data collected from a study of 378 women showed no correlation between alternating coffee usage and unfavorable IVF implantation outcomes.

Professor Thomas Smith of the Royal Melbourne Hospital explains: “The small results suggest coffee does not appear to have any effect on increasing the odds of pregnancy in IVF cycles. The results of this study do not provide evidence that it is unsafe to drink coffee during IVF stimulation, however patients should still consult with their doctor before making any changes to their diet.”

This research is certainly encouraging, however it’s important to note that while coffee itself is not linked to unsuccessful IVF, caffeine may be something that should be avoided. According to Dr. Stephanie Bovee, an OB/GYN at the Baylor Women’s Wellness Center: “Caffeine’s stimulating effects may play a role in interfering with fertility treatments. This is why we recommend patients refrain from consuming caffeine during the IVF stimulation period.”
