Drinking coffee while following an intermittent fasting plan has become a highly debated topic. With the 16:8 fasting plan, followers are encouraged to fast for 16 hours and then eat all meals in an 8-hour window. But what about coffee? Is drinking coffee allowed within this fasting window? The answer is yes, with some considerations.

Coffee contains caffeine, which has an appetite-suppressing quality and is not considered a “food”. Therefore, drinking a cup of coffee while fasting will not break the fast. Additionally, there have been studies indicating that coffee has a beneficial effect on stimulating the metabolism which can help one leads to successful weight loss results during intermittent fasting.

However, it is not advisable to load coffee with unhealthy fats and sweeteners such as processed sugars, syrups and creams during the fasting period. Generally, sweeteners and creams can activate insulin in the body, which can disrupt fast and slow down the weight loss process. If you absolutely need something extra for your coffee during the fast, consider adding healthy and natural ingredients like milk, coconut milk or almond milk, or even grass-fed butter and alternative sweeteners like monk fruit extract.

At the same time, certain medical professionals advise taking appropriate caution when consuming caffeine during intermittent fasting as it can cause dehydration if caffeinated drinks are consumed excessively. The body needs water to remain hydrated and perform at its optimally. It is advised to drink plenty of water to remain sufficiently hydrated while intermittent fasting. Drinking one to two cups of coffee should be fine, but it is recommended to not exceed this quantity.
