Coffee is a beloved morning pick-me-up for many people, but if you’re suffering from a yeast infection this beverage may bring plenty of unwelcome side effects. Although it might seem like a harmless drink, coffee’s caffeine content might actually exacerbate your yeast infection.

To understand why, it’s important to understand what a yeast infection is. Yeast infections, also known as Candidiasis, are caused by a fungus called Candida that expands in certain areas of the body. Candida normally lives in the body and only becomes a problem when their growth becomes out of balance.

Most often, yeast infections show themselves in the form of genital itching and burning, but can also appear in many other areas of the body, such as the mouth and skin. These infections often produce other symptoms, including inflammation and discomfort.

Caffeine has been found to help increase Candida growth, as it affects the body’s pH balance. When your body’s pH balance is off, it can in turn cause an environment in which Candida easily multiplies and causes an infection. For this reason, even if you’re an avid coffee drinker, if you have a yeast infection you might want to reconsider.
