Coffee is the most widely consumed beverage in the world according to the International Coffee Organization. For many people, it’s a deliciously frothy and flavorful way to start the day and to help stay alert and productive. But could drinking coffee lead to harm for those diagnosed with a sensitive digestive disorder called gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis is a common digestive disorder affecting the stomach and intestines. It is an inability of the stomach to empty its contents in a normal fashion, leading to symptoms such bloating, nausea, fullness, and erratic blood glucose levels. It is particularly associated with diabetes, and is a known consequence of nerve and muscle damage caused by the disease.

The question remains: can those with gastroparesis benefit from drinking coffee or should they avoid it altogether? Although research appears to be split on this, experts in the medical field offer some insight. Dr. Mohammed Kassab, a gastroenterologist at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, explains that any type of liquid, including coffee, will empty faster from the stomach than a solid meal. This is because the presence of liquids can stimulate the digestive process, leading to gastric emptying which then causes a decrease in symptoms.

Dr. Kassab adds: “Coffee, of course, contains caffeine which has a known stimulatory effect on the digestive system. I often recommend caffeinated coffee to my gastroparesis patients because of this fact.” He points out, however, that the individual needs to consider the caffeine load, as too much can be problematic.
