Our daily lives revolve around caffeine, from energy drinks and lattes to sodas and strong, black espressos. Coffee, in particular, is by far one of the most popular and widely consumed beverages, consumed by millions of people in countless stages and format. But, how much is it really healthy to drink? And what is the right amount of coffee to drink per day?

Determining how much Coffee is right for you, depends on several factors. Caffeine sensitivity can vary between individuals; many react differently depending on their biology, stress levels, hydration, and overall health. On average, however, according to the American Heart Association, you should consume no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine daily. This is equivalent to 4 cups of coffee.

The amount of coffee consumed can affect an individual’s sleep cycle, which is an important factor in maintaining overall health and well-being. A study from the Division of Sleep and Chronobiology at the University of Pennsylvania, showed that those who drink moderate amounts of coffee throughout the day, will likely not be affected. The key here is moderation. Even just one cup consumed in the middle of the afternoon can lead to difficulty sleeping.

The effects of caffeine also vary in part due to the content of each cup. The method with which a person prepares coffee — lattes, espressos, cappuccinos — will influence the amount of caffeine in each cup. For example, an 8-ounce cup of coffee, or espresso, contains approximately 95 to 200 milligrams of caffeine, while a 12-ounce cup contains slightly more. Moreover, specialty coffee drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos, typically contain added sugar, which could also have an affect on overall health. Keep in mind, if your coffee contains added sugar, the total calories in each cup can add up over time.
