Does Drinking Coffee Affect Baby When Breastfeeding

According to scientific research, the answer to this question is: yes, coffee can have an effect on a baby while breastfeeding. However, this opinion is disputed, as some experts feel that coffee has positive impacts on babies when breastfeeding. To come to our own conclusion on the matter, we must first understand the connection between coffee and a baby’s breastmilk.

When coffee is consumed, caffeine is absorbed and enters the bloodstream quickly. This causes a heightened level of alertness and perky mood, which is why many people opt for coffee as a breakfast drink or energy-boosting snack. As with any compound that enters the bloodstream, caffeine is then absorbed in the breastmilk, producing a somewhat similar effect in a breastfeeding baby. Some of the effects that this can cause in a baby include restlessness and even increased irritability, at times.

Despite coffee’s relatively serious impacts, it is still a popular beverage of choice for nursing mothers. According to a study conducted by researchers, approximately 8.7 out of 10 nursing mothers consume coffee, with an average of about 2 cups daily. Despite this, the effects posed by coffee on a baby during breastfeeding are uncertain. While some experts feel that a moderate intake of coffee does not pose a risk to newborn and breastfeeding babies, others feel that it is best to limit or avoid caffeine altogether until the baby is older, around 6 months of age.

Dr. Susan Meltzer, a pediatrician who specializes in infant health states, “It is best to limit coffee intake per day, as to avoid overstimulating and upsetting the baby. If a nursing mother absolutely needs her coffee, then I would suggest that she aim to limit herself to one cup a day, not more.” When asked an opinion on the matter, Dr. William Burke, a veteran Obstetrician-Gynecologist, states: “The key to safe intake of caffeine while nursing is moderation. If a mother avoids drinking more than one cup of coffee a day, then her baby will not experience any negative effects from her consumption.”
