Coffee is a popular beverage that is enjoyed all over the world every day. But does it really have any impact on our skin? Is drinking coffee darkening our skin? Despite its popularity, there is much debate surrounding this often-argued topic.

A lot of people think that caffeine can lead to skin darkening, but there is no scientific evidence to support this. Although, drinking coffee can make the face appear darker due to the release of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for determining skin color. Melanin is created when the body encounters ultraviolet light and is then released into the skin, darkening it. It is released in response to UV exposure and its effect can be cumulative. It is also believed that too much coffee can also cause dehydration, leading to dark patches on the face.

Drinking coffee can also increase the production of cortisol, a hormone commonly associated with stress. Stress can cause the body to produce more melanin, resulting in darkening of the skin. While it’s true that people who drink coffee can have slightly darker skin, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is because of coffee.

In fact, several studies suggest that coffee can actually protect against UV damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. This could be because coffee is rich in anti-inflammatory polyphenols, which are believed to reduce UV damage, as well as having antioxidant properties that protect the skin from environmental damage.
