Coffee has long been viewed as a “pick-me-up” beverage but, actually, there are a number of physical and mental health benefits related to drinking coffee that are especially helpful for teenagers. Coffee consumption in teenagers is beneficial for heart health, and especially for reducing the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, according to research from the American Heart Association. This is because coffee reduces inflammation, increases the production of antioxidants, and improves the functioning of the endothelium, the cells that line the outermost layer of the blood vessels.
\nIn addition to this, coffee consumption has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer and other age-related diseases in young people. Dr. Matthew Johnson, a medical researcher at Brown University, shares that, “aside from its potential anti-diabetes and anti-cancer effects, healthy coffee consumption has been found to reduce the risk of stroke, coronary artery disease, and coronary heart disease in certain age groups.”<\/p>\n

Energy and Mental Focus<\/h2>\n

For teenagers, energy and mental focus are two of the primary benefits of coffee consumption. Coffee is a well-documented stimulant, and to a lesser extent, a mild antidepressant. “Coffee may enhance mental performance, alertness, and energy,” states Dr. Johnson, “as it masks the feelings of fatigue associated with prolonged periods of wakefulness”. The caffeine in coffee boosts mood and alertness, reducing the risk of anxiety and depression.
\nCompared to energy drinks, coffee is a much healthier option. “The effects of caffeine in coffee are more sustained and smooth in comparison to energy drinks,” states Dr. Johnson. “Coffee contains a range of beneficial vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and selenium, which can be absent in energy drinks.”<\/p>\n

Relevant Dosage and Age Group<\/h2>\n

Coffee, like alcohol, can be addictive. Excessive consumption can cause physical and mental health complications, including anxiety, insomnia, hypertension, and irritability. It is important to note that there are age and dosage restrictions applicable when it comes to coffee consumption in teenagers. The recommended daily amount for teenagers is less than 300 milligrams per day, i.e. two to three cups of coffee.
\nAlisa Duchnik, a nutritionist and counselor at the University of Southern California, explains that“while it can be beneficial for teenagers to consume coffee in moderation, it is important to consider their age, weight, height, and lifestyle when determining how much coffee is safe for them to drink.”<\/p>\n

Nutritional Benefits<\/h2>\n

Teenagers who consume coffee in moderation also gain nutritional benefits from the beverage. Good quality coffee contains numerous amounts of polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants. Research suggests that polyphenols are particularly beneficial for teenagers as they may help to reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer.
\nIn addition to polyphenols, coffee contains riboflavin (vitamin B2), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), manganese, potassium, magnesium, and niacin (vitamin B3). Coffee also provides a good source of dietary fibre, which helps to reduce cholesterol and maintains healthy digestion in teenagers.<\/p>\n
