Background

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a common heart rhythm disorder that affects more than 2.7 million people in the United States alone. This irregular heartbeat can cause palpitations, shortness of breath, excessive fatigue and chest pain. People with AFib are typically prescribed medications and lifestyle changes. One of the recommended lifestyle changes is to avoid coffee and other caffeine-containing substances. Yet, coffee still remains a popular beverage among many AFib patients and can be found regularly in American households.

Heart Rhythm & Caffeine

Studies have shown that caffeine has a direct effect on the heart rate. It stimulates the heart’s electrical system, creating an effect similar to exercise. Caffeine also increases the flow of blood, creating a potential for increased strain on the upper chambers of the heart. These are both good and bad, depending on an individual’s situation. If a person has a weakened heart muscle, caffeine may cause an unhealthy increase in their heart rate.

For people with Atrial Fibrillation, drinking coffee can reduce the body’s ability to manage heart rate irregularities. If a person has a weak AFib beat, the effect of coffee can reduce the effectiveness of their anticoagulant medications, resulting in an increased risk of stroke.

Pros & Cons

Coffee, like many other things, comes with its pros and cons. For many, drinking the occasional cup of coffee or espresso can improve alertness and energy levels. The caffeine, however, can also lead to dehydration and a heightened risk of palpitations or irregular heart rhythms – two common side effects of Atrial Fibrillation.
