Gum grafting is a dental procedure to correct receded gums, an issue that many adults experience either due to genetics or periodontal disease. During a gum graft, the dentist eliminates gum tissues from the roof of the mouth to a location along the gum line. This new gum tissue will assist to form a healthier gum line, and help protect teeth from eventual bone loss.

The general consensus is that it can take upwards of a week to heal from a gum graft procedure, with this time frame typically consisting of 3 to 4 days of reduced activity, and 4 to 7 days of complete recovery. While some people may be tempted to have a cup of coffee during the healing process, experts warn that this isn’t advisable.

The issue with drinking coffee soon after a gum graft is that the temperature of the beverage could be too intense for the surgical location and may cause problems for the area that could ultimately put the graft at risk. Also, sipping too quickly or drinking coffee shortly after a gum graft could cause saliva to lack around the new tissue, leading to infection.

For those who have recently undergone a gum graft, there are several tips that should be followed during the period of recovery, specifically as it relates to drinking coffee.

Once the initial recovery period is over, it is fine to start drinking coffee but with caution. Invest in a good quality thermal mug, to ensure that the beverage remains warm but never too hot. Patients should wait until at least a week has passed since the gum graft to have their first cup of coffee.

When drinking the coffee, take small, slow sips to allow saliva to wash around the graft. Patients should also limit the amount of coffee consumed to no more than two cups per day, to reduce the risk of negative side-effects.
