Hot Coffee Beverages
A hot cup of coffee is an energizing and refreshing pick-me-up that many people enjoy on a daily basis. Hot coffee beverages can provide much more than just caffeine, however; with the right ingredients you can make a variety of different-tasting drinks that are sure to please. Read on to find out how to make and customize different types of hot coffee drinks.
Espresso
The classic espresso is a strong and flavorful drink that is commonly used as a base for many other coffee beverages. To make a single shot of espresso, you’ll need to start with finely ground dark-roast coffee beans. Place the grounds into an espresso machine, add in boiling water of 195–205 degrees Fahrenheit, and tamp down firmly — a process which compresses the grounds together to create more surface area for the hot water. If desired, you can then add in sugar and a little bit of frothed milk on top.
Cappuccino
Cappuccino is a popular espresso-based coffee drink that is generally made from one third espresso, one third hot milk, and one third steamed frothed milk. To make a warm and creamy cappuccino, start by brewing a single shot of espresso. Steam the desired amount of milk until it is hot and frothy, and then pour the espresso and steamed milk into a cup. Optionally, you can also finish with a sprinkle of cocoa powder or cinnamon on top.
Americano
An Americano is a type of hot coffee beverage that has a balanced and mild flavor. To make it, start by brewing an espresso in an espresso machine. Take a glass and fill it with 12 ounces of water. Finally, pour the espresso into the water and savor your intense yet smooth Americano.
Latte
A latte is a type of hot coffee beverage that is made from espresso and steamed milk. It has a strong coffee taste and a smooth, creamy, slightly-sweet flavor. To make a latte, begin by brewing a single shot of espresso. Steam 2-4 ounces of milk using an espresso machine until it is hot and foamy. Then, pour the espresso and steamed milk into a mug, leaving room for a decorative foam crown on top. Optionally, stir in a spoonful or two of your favorite flavored syrup before serving.
Cold Coffee Beverages
Cold coffee drinks can be the perfect way to cool down and enjoy the flavor of your favorite coffee. Here are a few simple ways to make great-tasting cold coffee beverages.
Iced Coffee
Iced coffee is a refreshing way to enjoy your morning java. To make a simple iced coffee, take your favorite regular-strength brewed coffee and pour it over ice. If desired, you can also add sugar, milk, and/or flavored syrups. For an even more tropical flavor, try adding a teaspoon or two of dark-roast chicory coffee grounds.
Cold Brew
A cold brew is a type of brewed coffee that is made with cold water, rather than hot water. It is a much smoother and less acidic beverage with a distinct flavor that some people prefer over regular hot coffee. To make your own cold brew coffee, coarsely grind 2 ounces of coffee beans and steep them in one quart of cold water for 12-14 hours. When finished, you can strain the mixture and serve it over ice.
